I make performances to explore my own questions about the world. In most processes, I begin by triangulating between my own feelings or hunches and other peoples ideas (writings, theories or works of art). Collaborators bring their own questions, imaginations, and skills. We put our embodied intelligence in the center of the questions and resources and start to make a pathway through. Sometimes we get swept up in beauty or athleticism and sometimes we diligently puzzle. In the peak moments, we do it all. Watching my own work, I am most often paying attention to the way energy moves: performance quality, physical tension, momentum, timing, spatial design, digital media, sound and light create metaphors and direct audience attention. Recently, I’ve become more interested in crafting detailed movement, which I find very challenging. I see performances as an opportunity to open this collaborative process to a bigger group. I hope that my work sparks audience members’ sense of their own embodied intelligence. In this list you will see choreography, mediated choreography, videodance, and improvisation. I have separated professional work from work with students, although these two realms often cross and inform one another.

“Shake.” Performer, Co-choreographer. Working title for an evening-length duet choreographed and performed in collaboration with Iddrisu Saaka (Ghana/Malawi/USA). We started working together because of our friendship and shared movement proclivities, but are aware of the influences of gender and culture on the work as it develops. A piece in two parts and a structure for making a dance, FORWORD/AFTERWORD is a trio that foregrounds collaborative authorship and the blurred lines between choreography and improvisation. Annie Kloppenberg, Meredith Lyons and I perform it in dance showcases and teach workshops in the method.
